If you need to visit a DMV office or complete a transaction by mail under the following circumstances:

  • If you possess a license or permit from a different state.
  • If you’ve recently replaced your license, permit, or ID and haven’t received the new one in the mail yet.
  • If you have a temporary (interim) license, permit, or non-driver ID.
  • If you cannot locate your Document Number.

Here are some key details to note:

DMV ID Number:

  • This is a 9-digit number found on the front near the top of your license, permit, or non-driver ID.
  • Your ID Number remains constant and does not change when you replace your license, permit, or ID.

Document Number:

  • This is an 8 or 10-character combination of numbers and letters on your license, permit, or non-driver ID.
  • Each document issued has a unique number, and this number changes when you renew or replace your document.
  • Use the Document Number from your most recently issued license, ID, or permit for MyDMV or to register to vote.
  • Be mindful that characters may appear similar (e.g., an “I” may resemble a “1” or an “O” may resemble a “0”).

Regarding REAL ID:

DMV began issuing Federal REAL ID documents on October 30, 2017, which feature an image of a “Star” on them.

Standard:

As of May 3, 2023, a Standard license, learner permit, or non-driver ID cannot be used for domestic flights within the U.S. or to enter a federal building or military base.

To check the mailing status of your license, permit, or non-driver ID, follow these steps:

  • Visit the DMV website.
  • Enter your name or DMV ID Number from your Driver License, Learner Permit, or Non-driver ID.
  • Provide your date of birth and sex.

Your document will be mailed to the address on record, and it typically takes about 2 weeks to receive it.
