Jehovah’s Witness Influence: NBA Players Danny Granger, Dewayne Dedmon, and Darren Collison

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a melting pot of athletes from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. While the majority align with Christianity or atheism, a select few identify as Jehovah’s Witnesses. This article delves into the lives of three former NBA players who adhere to the Jehovah’s Witness faith: Danny Granger, Dewayne Dedmon, and Darren Collison.

Danny Granger:

Danny Granger, a skilled small forward, graced the NBA courts primarily with the Indiana Pacers from 2005 to 2015. Garnering All-Star status in 2009, Granger was not only known for his on-court prowess but also for his philanthropic endeavors in Haiti and advocacy for mental health awareness.

Raised in a Jehovah’s Witness household, Granger attributes his faith to providing the inner peace necessary to navigate the challenges of professional sports. According to him, being a Jehovah’s Witness instills a sense of serenity that transcends into his basketball performances.

Dewayne Dedmon:

Standing tall at 7 feet, Dewayne Dedmon played as a center for multiple NBA teams, including the Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings, and Atlanta Hawks. His journey into high school basketball was delayed due to religious restrictions imposed by his mother. Undeterred, Dedmon persevered and dedicated himself to honing his basketball skills.

Dedmon credits his faith with helping him maintain composure and a positive attitude through the trials of his early basketball career. In his words, “My faith has been a guiding force, allowing me to navigate challenging circumstances with composure and steadfastness.”

Darren Collison:

Former point guard Darren Collison, known for his stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, and Indiana Pacers from 2009 to 2019, retired from the NBA at the age of 31, citing religious motivations.

Growing up in a Jehovah’s Witness family, Collison openly discussed the challenges of balancing his profession and faith. Despite the difficulties, he consistently prioritized his religious convictions, eventually leading to his decision to retire from professional basketball.

Conclusion:

While Jehovah’s Witnesses may be underrepresented in the NBA, the influence of faith has been significant for players like Granger, Dedmon, and Collison. Overcoming obstacles and staying true to their convictions, these players have left a lasting impact on the game, showcasing how faith played a pivotal role both on and off the basketball court.
