Major in the Kargil War

Born and raised in Kerala, Sandeep Unnikrishnan played a crucial role in the Kargil War as a Malayali officer in the Indian Army. Leading the 51 Special Action Group commandos, he earned commendation for his bravery.

During the Kargil War in 1999, Sandeep established a forward post, engaging terrorists with relentless gunfire. He displayed courage in Operation Vijay, rescuing hostages and confronting the enemy without air support. His service extended to Operation Parakram, where his group faced a rocket explosive.

In 2007, as part of the Special Action Group, Sandeep contributed to flushing out terrorists from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, rescuing hostages despite sustaining injuries. His funeral reflected the deep respect the military had for him.

Death in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a 31-year-old Indian Army officer, fell victim to the Mumbai terror attack on November 26, 2008. Leading Operation Black Tornado, he aimed to rescue hostages at the Taj Mahal Hotel and was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra.
